    • George R. Wendt, Realtor

George R. Wendt, a South Side Realtor and veteran Navy officer who was the father of George Wendt Jr. of TV's "Cheers," died Tuesday in Newport, R.I. He was 70 years old.

The Beverly resident was attending the Naval War College's annual current strategy forum at the invitation of the secretary of the Navy.

Mr. Wendt owned William H. Wendt Inc., a realty firm at 9933 S. Western that was founded by his father in 1921. His son, who played Norm Peterson in the former sitcom, once worked there.

"He worked with me in real estate and hated it," Mr. Wendt once told a newspaper reporter. "Then he went to Second City and enjoyed that."

The elder Mr. Wendt appeared in several "Cheers" episodes, something his family said he was very proud of.

Mr. Wendt's naval career spanned five decades, and he retired as a captain. He joined the Navy while attending the University of Notre Dame. As an ensign during World War II, he served with the South Pacific fleet and participated in the Okinawa invasion.

He returned stateside in February, 1946, and married Loret, the daughter of newspaper photographer Tom Howard. Mr. Wendt was sent to Europe 30 days later and served in naval intelligence until being discharged in December. For the next 37 years, he served in the naval reserves, retiring in 1983.

In 1992, the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program named him its man of the year.

A graduate of Leo High School, he earned a degree in business administration from Notre Dame after his military hitch.

Mr. Wendt was commander of the Illinois Commandry of the 100-year-old Naval Order of the United States. His other memberships included the Illinois Naval Militia, Navy League of the United States and Naval Order of the United States. He was a director of Beverly Bank.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by four daughters, Kathryn Sudeikis, Loretta Jolivette, Marty Doherty and Nancy Healy; two other sons, Tom and Paul, and 19 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Kenny Brothers, 3600 W. 95th St., Evergreen Park. Mass will be offered at noon tomorrow at Christ the King Catholic Church, 9235 S. Hamilton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West 87th and South Hamlin, Evergreen Park.
